You Hyeonkyeong earned her Bachelor and Master degree at Fine Art in Seoul National University. Her painting is aimed to be made by hands before anything to be perceived in the head.
You’s work conveys untamed raw feelings without any deep consideration. She recollects suppressed things that she couldn’t express to people. When she starts to paint, she can express many things that she has observed and sometimes her experiences pour out things more than she expected. Her experiences, memories and unconsciousness beyond are left with sensual movements with vivid colors and improvised messiness on the screen. The tense relationships between people and between the eyes of the observer and the object are expressed in sexual symbolism and iconology. It brings out intense feelings and curiosities rather than causing offensive and obscene feelings.
You started to present her works more actively since being selected in the New Artist Exhibition Program in Seoul Museum of Art in 2009; in the same year, she won Ha Dong-chul Award and was selected in ‘Monsters of the East’ in Art in Culture magazine. She is drawing continuous attention, being selected as the “Artist of OCI Museum” (2011), Seoul Foundation for Art and Culture (2012), and Young Korean Artists of National Museum of Modern and Contemporary Art (2013).
