RYU Hoon

RYU Hoon (1954–2014) earned his BFA in Sculpture from Seoul National University in 1977 and an MFA from the same institution in 1985, the year he presented his first solo exhibition at Gonggan Museum of Art. During his lifetime he held a total of five solo shows. Beginning in 1987 he served as a professor of sculpture and visual arts, devoting his career to both artistic practice and education.

RYU was active in alumni based collectives such as the Seoul Sculpture Association and the Modern Space Club, as well as the KSBDA. He also contributed to the development of regional public art as an advisor and committee member for bodies such as the Incheon University Research Institute for Sculptures.

Representative works include Untitled (1983), Representation of Coexistence (1988), Form (1993), Figure (1997), Dream (2012), Coexistence—Dream (2013) and Coexistence (2022). His sculptures are held in the collections of the Seoul Museum of Art (Seoul), Daejeon Museum of Art (Daejeon, Korea), Gyeongin National University of Education (Incheon, Korea) and Incheon National University (Incheon, Korea), among others, and he made numerous public commissions for institutions such as the Incheon Culture & Arts Center (Incheon, Korea), The Korean Teachers’ Credit Union (Incheon, Korea) the Seoul Metro Corperation (Incheon, Korea), and POSCO (Pohang, Korea).
