Choong Sup LIM

Lim Choong Sup is one of the Korean installation art's fist generation. He was born in 1941 in Chungbuk, Korea, and studied fine arts at the Seoul National University. In the mid 1970's, he moved to New York and received his M.F.A in New York University and has lived there ever since. Even in an unfamiliar environment, he has been working constantly and his creative work has been widely acclaimed.

Lim's work embodies an Eastern and Western sensibility. After moving to New York, he encountered unfamiliar environments and landscapes, and this experience encouraged him to deviate from the old perspective and attitude. Minimalism in America and Dansaekhwa in Korea were in the mainstream style in art during the period. Trying to distinct himself from these art movements, he soon realized approaching and incorporating these two styles would be the artistic concept that he should pursuit.

Lim said that his works are based on the bridging ‘gap’ between modern people’s civilization and nature. The gap is called emptiness in the East and void in the West. While traveling one world and the other, he continues binding the gap between these two world through sculpture, object, drawing, installation and media.

His works are in the famous museums including Metropolitan museum; New York, National Gallery of Australia; Australia, Henie Onstad Museum; Norway, Leeum, Samsung Museum of Art; Seoul, and so on. In 2012, he had a grand retrospective of his works in the National Museum of Contemporary Art in Korea.
