LEE LEE NAM

LEE LEE NAM (b. 1969) is a pioneering media artist who has developed a contemporary visual language by combining traditional painting with digital technology. Reinterpreting images from classical paintings and traditional landscapes through digital media, he has explored the points at which tradition and contemporaneity intersect.

His practice has expanded beyond video and media art to include large-scale media façades and public projects, and his works have been widely presented at museums, biennials, and international cultural events in Korea and abroad.

LEE LEE NAM was born in Damyang, Jeollanam-do, Korea. He graduated from the Department of Sculpture at Chosun University College of Fine Arts in 1995 and received an MFA in Fine Arts from the university’s graduate school in 1997. He subsequently completed doctoral coursework in Visual Arts at Yonsei University Graduate School of Communication and Arts and in Fine Arts at Chosun University Graduate School.

His major exhibitions and projects include Landscape Theater of Lee Lee Nam (2025, Asia Culture Center, Gwangju, Korea), Brilliant Landscape – Mongolia, Korea (2025, Chinggis Khaan National Museum, Ulaanbaatar, Mongolia), Beyond Form, Standing at the Center of Existence (2023, Gyeomjae Jeong Seon Museum, Seoul, Korea), Personal Structures: Crossing Borders (2015, Palazzo Bembo and Palazzo Mora, Venice, Italy), the performance commemorating the 50th anniversary of the Van Gogh Museum (2023, Van Gogh Museum, Amsterdam, Netherlands), and the Unique Henan · Land of Dramas media façade project (2021, Zhengzhou, China).

He has also participated in major exhibitions and projects including Paik Nam-june · Lee Lee Nam (2018, KAIST, Daejeon, Korea) and Bill Viola · Lee Lee Nam (2016, St. Jacob’s Church, Ghent, Belgium). In 2025, He presented a media façade at the Colosseum in Rome to commemorate the Year of Mutual Cultural Exchange between Korea and Italy. He has also participated in the 2024 Royal Palace Culture Festival at Changgyeonggung Palace, Seoul Media Art Week and the Sejong Center media façade project in 2022, and media façade projects in Madrid and Zhengzhou in 2021.

LEE LEE NAM has served as media art director for events including the opening ceremony of the 2019 Gwangju World Aquatics Championships and the closing ceremony of the 2017 FINA World Championships in Budapest. He has also participated in Google Arts & Culture projects and a Google Gemini art collaboration, and served as an artist sponsored by Samsung Electronics from 2008 to 2013.
