This exhibition was scheduled to delve into Jangheung, Jeollanam-do where artist Kim Sun-doo, novelist Lee Cheong-jun, poet Kim Young-nam and their works of art come from. Three artists, who shared emotional and cultural chemistry with one another, traveled together through their hometown and tried to understand and exchange their works of art in different genre. The first fruit of that trial is Kim Sun-doo’s solo exhibition and the three artists’collaborated book 「Lying down with Jade Green Sea Cover, on Azalea Pillow」 published in conjunction with the exhibition. The focus of this exhibition is the way the artist transfigured his hometown, had been read by a novelist and a poet, into his own genre - painting. Kim Sun-doo’s paintings of this exhibition did not merely illustrate the works by novelist Lee Cheong-jun and poet Kim Young-nam but adopted the novels and the poems as source materiallike papers or colors. In Kim Sun-doo’s paintings on Jangheung, his own innermost image of hometown was combined with that of other two artists’. In spite of the excerpts from the novels or the poems appeared with the paintings, his picturedoes not fall under the category of illustration. Kim Sun-doo’s paintings, like his gangji (traditional Korean paper) paintings, spread and permeated into theliterature of Lee Cheong-jun and Kim Young-nam, and then soaked out new meanings from it. These paintings make us get excited at anexpectation of a new genre.
