The sound of Spring
Artist Chung Kyung-ja was born between Korean father and Japanese mother in 1939 and lived here untilhigh school days; but the life as an artist was fully bloomed in recent thirty years when she worked in France and Japan. That’s why she was not widely known to Korean art world. This exhibition offers a chance to meet an artist, with a still unfamiliar name for us, Chung Kyung-ja. Chung Kyung-ja’s halcyon days of youth were broken to pieces through the tragedy of Korean War and the division of the Korean peninsula the pain of that appeared in her early paintings on dolls as symbol and metaphor. In France, with a dream of an artist, she was somewhat liberated from the irrecuperable trauma of the youth and the confusion of identity between Korean and Japanese. During the sojourn in Paris, a city of freedom and art, sheregained the economical, mental stability and opened a new figurative painting period, which featured fantastic canvas with bold and bright palette. She returned to her homeland in the middle of 1990s and settled down in Yangpyeong, Gyeonggi-do. There Chung Kyung-ja set up an atelier and a gallery named after her, and she was infatuated with the nature. Everyday life of finding pleasure in a blade of grass and a gust of wind of the motherland, which she had forgotten for the long period of living abroad, brought her innermost world of abstract art rooted in the nature. Brilliant, arbitrary colors of Paris period gave way to warm and soft pastel palette; and the brisk lines of city sentiment absorbed into the color abstraction of the nature. All art, like this, is a result of the artist’s confession and reflects the life of the artist anyhow. In this exhibition offers a chance to meet splendid colors o the spring and hear the artist’s confession of her life.
