This is the first time that artist Chen Wenji’s works are being introduced to the Korean public. Chen’s exhibition entitled “心象 (Mentality)” includes his newly created works, which are based upon his interpretations of an exhibition space. The headliner of this exhibition is entitled “a round (壹周),” which is characterized by the overwhelmingly powerful shade of blue that threatens to immerse you in to the work itself. Geometric paintings made using tools created by the artist himself and brushes radiate mysticism. Additionally, work titled “no full (不少),” consists of three spheres. The work, which chronicles the upward movement of the spheres’ surface of water represent the difficulties in determining the existence of time. three days and nights (三昼夜), which also portrays three points is divided into black and white as if to represent night and day. The transition between night and day, as well as a progression of time within the period of three days are indicated by the work. insomnia (失眠) is an extremely thin pieces which stretches over 200cm in length and just 10cm in width. The work exposes the silent struggle to fall asleep and the increasing boredom, which stretches deep into the night. The 9 ovals in 九天 (九天) are symbols with subtitles listed as: in case (万一), thereupon (于是), as well (并且), moreover (加以), and (和), however (不过), even if (虽), no matter (无论), therefore (所以). Each subtitle does not carry a specific symbol or meaning but are a record of feelings felt by the artist while working on the project. Moreover, the work titled ‘be away (将远)’ suggests the inability to reach time and space. As listed above, this exhibition showcases ten, recently produced works that are representative of the artist’s work methods and character.
