Hakgojae Cheongdam
[Shanghai] To show the star

Hakgojae Shanghai cordially invites you to “To show the star”, artist Kim Sundoo’s first solo exhibition in Mainland China on June 4 to July 3, 2016.

The title To show the star is the name of new series of Kim and also the name of a story by the writer the late Lee Cheong-jun. Kim himself has described his new series as an “homage” to Lee. Yet it is only the name that has been borrowed the paintings themselves are something completely new and original. To show the star depicts dreams, desires, and meanings of true lives in the reality through metaphors that stars carry. The stars that Kim Sundoo shows are a force that flows hidden behind this visible world, a power that helps us live here, a strength that awakens us and makes us move. Artist lyrically draws warmth of life and affairs of mankind and yet expresses Eastern painting in diverse through his own unique experimental techniques such as jangji technique, inverse perspective, collage, and steel ink painting.

Kim Sundoo studied Korean Painting at Choong Ang University and Graduate School and currently is a professor at the university. His works are part of public collections at National Museum of Modern and Contemporary Art, Seoul Museum of Art, Sungkok Art Museum, Ho-Am Art Museum, Kumho Museum of Art, and more. Since last year, Hakgojae has been showing a series of exhibitions Contemporary Ink Painting, which is projected in our hope to make a new discourse on Asian contemporary ink paintings. Through To show the star, we hope to be a place for artists and scholars to discuss contemporary ink painting when today, various issues of Oriental Art can be conversed together in Asia with political, economical, societal, and cultural conditions are fully matured.
