The key note for my work is building a bridge of mine between nature and human civilization in Modern society. Blank space in Eastern culture and Void in Western culture is the between. A dichotomy exist between the modern civilization and nature. At the same time, the modern civilization and nature also share mutual understanding and bring meanings while they are in harmony of blank space of eastern painting and minimal art.
Western critics have academically analyzed my art works and categorized them into conceptual art and minimal art. However, I was not aware of the categorization at the beginning. My constant working for art led me to receive the part of modern art category. To me, blank space is a bridge between modern civilization and nature. The role of the bridge is revert to the cognition light and nature. The ironies in today’s modern society, such as a vulnerable lone tree in the midst of city’s concrete jungle, between those that symbolize the fierce race of our objectified ego, such tree dawns on me like a saint and my perception of these ironies have become the theme of my work.
‘Luna’ is the theme of this exhibit. For western spatial structures, the Sun played a more significant role than the Moon. However, I wanted to modernize the eastern culture’s poetic take of the Moon. The moon contains more gloomy images(negative space/void space) than the sun. To me, monochrometic thinking that moon light brings me deeper notion of blank space that sun provides.
In my installation work, I want to present connectivity between the ground and sky, not sky itself. My work is in the present tense. Every cities of the world carries out a civil engineering project. This is the earth situation now. The location for the civil construction is equal to my work place. In a sense, the dug up soil means a blank space that the nature grants me. The nature in this city place- moon and soil-is a part of tremor spiritual trace and process of my work.
Past experiences leave spiritual traces for now. Departure and arrival point are the most important matter of art. Buddhism is also departure and arrival point for me. Soil is trembling reference and blank space. Moreover, the soil shows passion of modern people for returning back to the nature. Blank space between civilized city and nature is blank state of my mind. I recognize Buddhism as a religion which believes in the blank space. Art might be a way of making one’s own religion.
