Günther Uecker, was born in Wendorf, Mecklenburg, Germany, as a son of a farmer in 1930. He started his career as an artist after his studies from 1955 to 1957 at the Düsseldorf Academy of Fine Arts, where renowned artists such as Joseph Beuys, Gergard Rheiter, and Nam June Paik attended. He was a professor of the Düsseldorf Academy of Fine Arts School from 1976 to 1995.
 
Günther Uecker is known as a ‘nail artist’. He is best known for his relief paintings using nails. He has witnessed contemporary art dealing with violence against foreigners, racism, and the people who suffered. As he experienced the tragedy of the Cold War and World War II, he is trying to heal the pain with his art. The materials of the work – nails, stones, and bandages are the biggest characteristics of his work. At the end of World War II, He used these materials defensively rather than aggressively – he nailed his house closed in a symbolic act of self-protection. The artist said, “I chose these materials as a symbol of recovering and purification in the middle of the secular world with conflicts and pain”
 
The artist participated in Documenta 4, Kassel in 1968 and the Venice Biennale in 1970. He has had numerous solos shows Germany. In 2008, he was had an exhibition in Hakgojae, Seoul. His works can be found in the collection of institutions: Tate Modern, London; Museum of Modern Art, New York; the Georges Pompidou Centre, Paris; and Peggy Guggenheim Collection, Venice.
