Giuseppe PENONE

Giuseppe Penone was part of Arte Povera movement in 1970s in Italy. Born in Turin, Italy in 1947, he studied at Torino Art Academy in 1970 but returned to his hometown after feeling futile towards academic education in art. Penone usually uses materials such as stones, pine resin, leather, and trees, in which can be found easily in nature, to stimulate the borderline between human and nature and criticizes dependence that exists between the two. Organic materials are processed and alternated by the artist and become a link between various forms and organizations of life and their possibilities and systems—ultimately demonstrate an effective and metaphorical effect. His works are very organic and animated, and physically change restlessly. Through interaction between the natural flow and artistic process of change, Penone discusses strong vitality created by infinite possibilities and changes.

Recently, he held solo exhibitions at Gagosian Gallery, Marian Goodman Gallery, Versailles, and participated in group exhibitions in major art galleries and museums in Europe and United States of America. His works are part of collections in Tate Britain and Liverpool, Modern of Museum of Art in New York, and Lambert Collection in Avignon, France.
